The weekly test becomes a benchmark moment
Last year we introduced the “typing help” to support children with a fear of failure during the weekly test. That worked very well: you told us your children experienced less anxiety around the test.
But we also heard that the extra exercises straight after a poor result sometimes caused extra frustration. The weekly test took a very long time, and children still felt they were being “punished” by having to retake it.
That is why we have adjusted the system:
- From now on the weekly test is a benchmark moment: not a test to pass or fail, but simply a measurement.
- Does a child not reach the required number of keystrokes per minute? Then they do not get extra exercises at that moment; instead the course adapts automatically the following week.
- Children who already type fluently get less repetition, and children who find it harder get some extra exercises during the lesson week — without noticing it themselves.
With these improvements we take away the frustration and make the typing course more adaptive, so it fits each child's level. That keeps the course motivating and tailored to personal needs, without stress or the feeling of falling behind.
Typing exercises refreshed
We have also improved the typing assignments themselves. There is now:
- More room on the screen for the text
- Larger, more legible letters
- Clearer visual feedback while typing
That makes the exercises tidier and more pleasant to do.
Focus on what is going well
Another change is that we no longer show the percentage of mistakes, but the percentage typed correctly. So no more focus on how much you get wrong, but on how much you get right!
That takes some getting used to at first: where the goal used to be “no more than 4% mistakes”, you now see “at least 96% correct”. The information stays the same, but the tone is more positive and motivating. We want to show children what is going well and encourage them to keep practising.
Technical improvements
Behind the scenes we have made a number of technical improvements. The game runs more smoothly as a result, and the 3D world looks that bit sharper and fresher. Some colours or spaces may therefore feel slightly different — something to get used to perhaps, but above all a step forward.
And we keep improving…
This update is another step in our search for the most enjoyable and most effective typing course for children. Do keep sharing your experiences with us at info@typemission.be — that way we build a better course for everyone together.
Happy typing!
