Our proved typing method
Our proven typing method behind every mission
Learning to touch-type well takes more than a lot of practice. A child has to learn the right finger positions, make the movements automatic and keep repeating the letters that are still hard. That is why TypeMission builds up step by step: from the home row and single letters to letter combinations, words, texts, speed and accuracy.
Typing well is about speed and accuracy alike. A solid typing skill starts with the right home position, the right fingering and enough targeted repetition. Every exercise has a clear purpose and builds on what the child already knows. Touch-typing cannot be learned in a week: it simply takes time.
A considered build-up
-
1
Starting from the home position
The course begins with the home row: Q S D F J K L M. These are the keys the fingers rest on in their neutral position. From this fixed starting point the child learns to strike every key with the right finger.
-
2
The right movement for every key
After the home row come the letters used most, such as I, O, E, N and R. We work with fixed finger paths: every finger has its own area of the keyboard and returns to its fixed place after every stroke.
Every finger path has a colour of its own. Once a letter has been learned, it is covered on the keyboard with a sticker in that same colour. The letter disappears from view while the colour still shows which finger belongs to it. That way the visual support is withdrawn step by step, and every letter ends up not only in the memory but in the fingers.

3
Making common letter combinations automatic
As soon as the movement to a letter is performed well, we practise common combinations of two and three letters: bigrams and trigrams.
Training these combinations means children no longer have to look for every letter separately. The movements increasingly run as one, and eventually become automatic. That is the basis for faster, more fluent typing.

4
From letters to words, sentences and whole texts
Once the letters and combinations are in the fingers, children apply the skill to words, short sentences and finally whole texts. Halfway through the course every letter has been taught; from there the attention shifts to typing ever more accurately and quickly.
The difficulty rises gradually. First the emphasis is on correct, accurate typing. As the movements become automatic, the speed can safely go up.
Repeating exactly what is still hard
Repetition is what gets touch-typing into muscle memory. But every child learns differently and struggles with different letters. That is why the games and exercises in TypeMission are adaptive: letters and movements that are still hard come back more often until they too are mastered.
A child does not spend needless time on what already goes well, and gets extra training where it has the most effect.
Practising effectively and staying motivated
Repetition turns monotonous quickly. The games in TypeMission are therefore not only fun but above all functional: they give children extra practice on hard letters and movements and make necessary repetition more varied.
That combination of a strong method, personal repetition and the pleasure of play is what keeps children practising. And regular practice is the key to a lasting result.
A validated method with plenty of practical experience
The typing method behind TypeMission was developed and validated together with the Leidse Onderwijsinstellingen (LOI). Since the start, more than 100,000 pupils have used TypeMission and earned a typing diploma. The course is also used by more than 30 schools.
